2021 Investment in Character and Leadership Fund Drive

Investment in Character and Leadership Annual Fund Drive

Dear Scout Families,

The Scout Motto is “Be Prepared.” During this COVID year, however, Troops 171B and 171G have turned for inspiration to the Cub Scout Motto, which is “Do Your Best.”

Thanks to our Scoutmaster staff and parent volunteers, we did our best this year to offer a Scouting program combining fun, adventure, and achievement.

Both troops took part in COVID-safe campouts and participated in multiple backpacking trips. We held a series of successful summer rotations. Scouts cut trees and built solo shelters. 171G Scouts combined orienteering and Halloween costumes for a nocturnal candy hunt. Scouts have continued to advance on all levels. Five of them earned the rank of Eagle this year.

Not every troop in Long Peak Council was this successful.

Many Scout families, including some of our own, were overwhelmed by trying to work at home while supervising multiple kids doing online schooling. Others lost their jobs or experienced a drop in income. These factors have caused some Longs Peak troops to shut down for good, while others have seen a precipitous reduction in members. COVID has had a severe impact on the finances of our Council.

Now is the time of year that we ask for contributions to Scouting’s Investment in Character and Leadership (ICL). The money goes to support Longs Peak Council, which provides Scout facilities that we use such as Camp Patiya, Chimney Park Scout Camp, and Ben Delatour Scout Ranch. Our ICL gifts also help maintain the Scout Store in Louisville and the full-time Scout staff who support us in many unseen ways.

Troop 171B and 171G have been extraordinarily generous with ICL in the past. Last year we gave over $10,000. This year our combined goal is $9,800, and our Council needs that money this year more than ever. If we reach our goal, our rank patches and merit badges will be free for another year.

If you believe that Scouting is a key factor in the lives of our sons and daughters, that the principles we uphold are important, and that the outdoor and leadership experiences we offer are essential, I hope you will join me in making an extra generous donation this year. To make your gift, please go to https://www.coloradogives.org/troop171_2021. You can give now or on Colorado Gives Day, which is Tuesday, December 8th.

Thanks for your support of Scouting,

Yuchen Chan
