Boy Scout Troop 171

Boulder, Colorado

Boy Scout Troop 171 History 1952-1995 YEAR S.M. COMMITTEE BOYS EARNED CHAIRMAN REGISTERED EAGLE 1952 S.M. Sam Kipp Jack Myers 7 A.S.M.Ray Jones Warren Keys The troop was started by Sam Kipp, Ray Jones and Warren Keys in 1952,and was sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church. The original troop consisted of 7 boys including 5 former Cub Scouts. They met on Monday nights on the third floor. 1953 Sam Kipp Abram McCoy 44 There was almost no troop equipment but they did some camping using private tents. They had the use of some land on Magnolia Road and Chuck Travis remembers "Magnolia Mulligan" stew. They put all the ingredients they could lay their hands on into the stew but one ingredient was evidently wrong because the whole troop got sick. The patrols also had portable foot locker-tables that they built themselves. 1954 Warren Keys Abram McCoy 40 1955 Robert James Abram McCoy 56 Cooking utensils for campouts were borrowed from the church. Somebody donated boxing gloves and they had boxing matches at troop meetings. The troop started going to Ben Delatour for summer camp quite early but I can't tell what year they went the first time. 1956 Dick Weeks R. Elmo Stephenson 41 The first crew went to Philmont about 1956. 1957 Tom Greenwood Leo Grill 42 1958 Tom Greenwood Charles Brogaw 24 Dave Stalz 1959 Tom Greenwood Charles Brogaw 32 1960 Elvie Apodaca Charles Brogaw 43 1961 Tom Greenwood John Edgar 47 Louis Brogaw Vance Boeve The period from 1956 to about 1965 seems to have been almost a golden age for the troop. They didn't have a lot of money or equipment but there was a lot of enthusiasm and the enrollment grew, reaching a peak of 76 boys in 1963. They tried to go camping once a month, winter and summer. They could camp almost anywhere on the front range and have the place to themselves. Each boy paid $.10/week dues and this money was used to buy patrol equipment. They bought Army surplus equipment and improvised a lot so that money went a long way. They also got money for football ushering but they got by on a very limited budget. One reason the troop thrived during this period was because boys didn't have as many other things to do and they concentrated on scouting. Tom Greenwood says he probably could have had 90 boys in the troop but they didn't recruit and he tried to be selective in inviting candidates to join. The troop attracted a lot of talented boys. Dick and Bobby Andersen and Hale Irwin were all active members of the troop around 1959. Meetings were now being held in the basement under the Westminster Room. They always sent a big contingent to Ben Delatour and sent 60 boys one summer. Troop 171 was one of the founders of the Klondike Derby and retired the first trophy by getting first prize three years in a row. 1962 Tom Greenwood David Gates 67 1963 Tom Greenwood Robert Downing 76 1964 Tom Greenwood Karl Anuto 75 Vance Boeve reports 171 was honor troop at summer camp in 1964. 1965 Tom Greenwood William Hellwig 40 Mike Thompson 1966 Dick Beno Neal Alcorn 26 Bill Coolidge 1967 Dick Beno John Taylor 22 Don Notvedt Church started to help finance troop to the tune of $100/year. 1968 Dick Beno Willard Haas 33 Ward Smith 1969 L.B. Hutchinson Elmo Bruner 26 Rob Beno British Bulldog was a popular game at troop meetings. Troop had one campout a month and often camped in big wall tents because they didn't have any good 2-man winter tents. Scott Miller says they had regular patrol meetings, took patrol hikes and had some patrol campouts. One of their money making projects was painting house numbers on curbs and some of these numbers can still be seen on curbs around Boulder. Summer camp was still at Ben Delatour. 1970 L.B. Hutchinson Elmo Bruner 34 1971 Keith Wallingford John Little 30 Dave Haas Starting around 1971, 1972, the troop started to summer camp at Chimney Park where they did their own cooking. 1972 Keith Wallingford John Little 23 Troop was camping regularly. Keith Wallingford remembers one Klondike that was held in a below-zero degree blizzard and everybody was very cold. Crews went to Philmont twice during . 1973 Keith Wallingford John Little 33 Jeff Hazen 1974 Keith Wallingford Walter Juhl 33 Scott Miller Dave Quick 1975 Paul Frederiksen 36 Jay Allsup Ronnie Hendricks Lee Juhl Steve Ingram 1976 Gary Graves 33 Randy Miller 1977 Gary Graves 39 Brian Spotts Matt Bate 1978 Gary Graves 40 1979 Gary Graves 38 Richard Coffman ASM Scott Miller John Ingram 1980 No Records Dale Grant Ted Knapp Dan Hubbard David Kneebone 1981 Vance Boeve 36 Barry Spotts Change over to Scott Miller 1982 Scott Miller 39 Scott August Eliot Snyder Activities included backpacks to Bunce School House, Bob and Betty Lakes, Fourth of July Campground.
